Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras
This display, featuring costumes by Peter Tully and Brenton Heath-Kerr celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. Since 1978 the annual parade has transformed the streets of Sydney into a colourful and lively spectacle celebrating the pride, diversity and creativity of LGBTQI* communities.
It has grown from a small political march commemorating the Stonewall Riots in New York to the world’s biggest gay and lesbian festival attracting crowds of over half a million local, interstate and international spectators.
The Mardi Gras parade has created opportunities for talented LGBTQI artists, designers and craftspeople. Every year they create costumes, posters and events that dazzle the crowds with their extravagance and playful humour.
