Duration: 3 hours
Artists in ResidenceWorkshop18+ Years

Join artist and designer Nikita Majajas to create an opal necklace, inspired by the work of Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson.

Using pre-cut shapes and chalk paints, capture the colours of Australia and your imagination to create your own unique pieces.

No jewellery making skills are required! Just a love of colour and wearable art! This workshop is designed for ages 18+.

Nikita is one of three contemporary Australian artists who have been invited as the Museum’s summer artists in residence. As part of their residency the artists will design and deliver workshops inspired by the work of Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson, exploring identity and expression through spectacle and adornment.

Nikita Majajas

Nikita Majajas (aka Nikita Margarita) has been enamored with the world of wearable art and craft since living in Japan in the late nineties and finding herself captivated by the creative street fashion that was prospering at that time and celebrated in the pages of publications such as Fruits Magazine. Inspired by the Harajuku kids wild and theatrical DIY street fashion, and on a high from landing on the pages of the magazine herself, she returned to Sydney Australia to study fashion design, shoe making and work as a stylist. She graduated with Distinction with an Advanced Diploma of Jewellery and Object Design from the Design Centre Enmore in 2007 and is a qualified silver-smith.

Since graduating from her studies she has participated in over 20 group exhibitions throughout Australia and held two sold out solo shows, Coco Loco: An Ode to Kitsch an exhibition of one off hand crafted coconut handbags and Plastique Fantastique. She regularly exhibits hand made jewellery and objects as well as home wares and accessories and is continually on a mission to breathe the energy of performance and the passion of pop into the personality of objects.

In 2013 Nikita was a successful applicant of the Visual Artist Residency at Brand X Studios in Surry Hills, and spent her time in the program developing a range of pop-art costume jewellery, this has grown into a fashion accessories brand: DOODAD AND FANDANGO. Inspired by contemporary artists such as Yayoi Kusama, Keith Haring and Haruki Murakami, her playful Perspex pieces, hand assembled in her Sydney studio makes bold and witty statements and straddle the divide between art and fashion.
