Join us for an exclusive curator tour of Reflections of Asia: Collectors and Collections with MAAS Curator Min-Jung Kim and gain expert insight into the stories behind the exhibition’s objects and creation.
For the first time ever, the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (MAAS) showcases its extensive Asian collection developed over the past 140 years and from across 25 countries. With a range of objects spanning the Neolithic period to now, the collection serves as a record of the enduring Western fascination with Asia. It shows how Australians have perceived the idea of Asia through collecting items and souvenirs, and how Asian cultures, art and technologies have inspired Western artists and makers.
This exhibition allows visitors to explore the collection by material groupings: wood and lacquer work, ceramics, metalwork, dress and textiles, small treasures, and contemporary art and fashion. Featuring key collectors, with select artworks on loan, it gives insight into the many reflections of Asia, from a place of exotic curiosities to an active agent in contemporary culture.
