Special FX: secrets behind the screen

Exhibition
21 April - 14 October 2007 Powerhouse Museum

Be chased by a fire-breathing dragon, take a death-defying leap across the mouth of a volcano, scale a sheer ice mountain or be an MTV rock star! Special FX is a thrilling interactive exhibition that puts you in the heart of the action using the same visual and special effects technology applied in Hollywood’s biggest movie blockbusters.

Special FX features more than 25 interactive exhibits that reveal many of the secrets behind film and television special effects and explores how science and technology is used to create the illusions we see on screen.

The highlight is six state-of-the-art video exhibits where you can be recorded in a starring role using blue screen technology. ‘Blue screens’ enable film directors and editors to perfectly blend suspenseful action and extraordinary backgrounds with amazing effect. Each video exhibit inSpecial FX uses a blue screen set to involve you in fun and hair-raising scenarios that demonstrate a range of special effects techniques…as well as your own acting flair! Best of all, your star performance can be captured on your very own souvenir VHS video or DVD.

Other exhibits in Special FX will reveal the secrets behind 3D animation, morphing, voice and sound manipulation and time lapse photography. Visitors will be able to animate their own Jurassic Park, take a 3D virtual ride on a futuristic roller coaster, make a stop animation using Lego models, or morph screen goddess Marilyn Monroe into Frankenstein!
