Hone your skills in these expert-led textiles workshops, drawing directly on the themes and techniques in the Akira Isogawa exhibition.

Studio Session: Experimental Embroidery and Stitch

An introduction to experimental embroidery with textiles expert, academic and practitioner Mary Brown. This workshop will explore free flowing experimental embroidery styles that build on more traditional techniques.

Learn a range of techniques that can be applied to create texture, layers and form via needle and thread. Discover new and expressive ways to explore visual motifs, experimenting with a variety of threads to produce unique results.

Who should attend?

All welcome but most suitable for beginners and intermediate textile practitioners wanting to explore new techniques.

What you’ll get 

Fabric, thread and needles to work with during the workshop. You will take your work with you to complete at home.

What to bring 

Everything is provided but you are welcome to bring thread, yarns or fabric to experiment.

Mary is currently an accredited tutor and judge for the Embroiderers’ Guild of N.S.W. Inc and has been a sessional lecturer in the Fashion & Textile Department at the University of Technology, Sydney since 2007. Mary’s research focuses on the design practice of artistic directors of embroidery ateliers and the use of new technologies in the embellishment of fashion.
