Guided by our expert astronomers, uncover the history of Sydney Observatory while discovering the science of contemporary astronomy on this 60-minute tour.
Trace the history of the Observatory to present day, view our historic time ball and flag staff and unearth the role the site has played in astronomy, time keeping and signalling. Tours include a visit to our telescope domes, where you can view the sun through our safe solar telescopes and learn about the science of our closet star – keep your eye out for sunspots and solar flares. Explore the Universe in our Planetarium and learn about the uniqueness of our southern sky and constellations.
Located in the heart of the historic Rocks neighbourhood, this experience is perfect for those visiting Sydney, and for anyone curious about local history and contemporary astronomy. Sydney Observatory is located on Sydney’s highest natural point and visitors can also enjoy 360° views of the Rocks, Observatory Hill and Sydney Harbour.
Recommended for ages 5+. Children under five may experience difficulty looking through the telescopes. Please note, it is not safe to look at the Sun through any normal telescope, with binoculars or the naked eye. Doing so could seriously damage your eyesight.
