Since its inception on 1 December 1988, World AIDS Day has played an important role in the ongoing global fight to remove the threat of HIV and AIDS. First diagnosed in 1981, the HIV and AIDS epidemic continues to be one of the world’s most significant public health issues, particularly in less affluent countries.

The theme for this year's WORLD AIDS Day is 'getting to Zero, which mean zero new HIV infections. Zero discrimination . Zero AIDS related Deaths'. Australia has come a long way since the first World AIDS Day in 1988 and the first AIDS case came to its shores in 1982.

Vince Lovegrove was an Australian journalist, music manager, television producer, musician and AIDS awareness campaigner. Perhaps best known for his job as manager of rock group Divinyls and singer Jimmy Barnes.
