Taronga Park Zoo monkey bike

Do you remember the monkeys riding tiny bicycles at Sydney's Taronga Park Zoo? This miniature tandem bicycle was made for the Zoo's monkey circus and used between 1936 and 1940. It's one of the most unusual bicycles produced by the Sydney firm, Edworthy Cycle & Motor Works.

This early pedal bicycle is a good example of a velocipede or boneshaker. It is on display in the Powerhouse Museum during August 2012 as part of a small exhibition titled 'Bicycle: simple idea, complex evolution' that I curated for the Ultimo Science Festival.

How do you ride this bike, where's the seat? This rare gentleman's bicycle in our collection takes its name from its Danish inventor, Mikael Pedersen, and the Gloucestershire town in England where it was made.
