This ordinary looking stamped-addressed envelope in the Museum's collection features two signatures, one is of the famous American aviator, Amelia Earhart, and the other F. (Fred) J. Noonan, her navigator during their pioneering world flight in 1937.

Simple objects can take us on fascinating journeys into the past. This Roll-a Road caught my eye in our basement store because of its resonance with modern GPS navigation devices. It is about the same size as a Navman and served much the same purpose, but it was designed for manual operation, its format is portrait rather than landscape, and the user had to know where they were before they could start using it to guide them to their destination.
In celebration of International Women's Day for 2012 I'd like to highlight the amazing short but inspiring aviation career of Maude (Lores) Bonney (1897-1994), one of Australia's pioneers. Lores’ passion for flying began after a flight in 1928 with aviation legend, Bert Hinkler, her husband's cousin.
