Observatory Sydney
Sept 14th 1863
John Barker Esqre
“Walla”
Sir
I beg to inform you that your brother the late Dr Barker of Casino when he died held the appointment of Meteorological Observer at Casino and also, that several Instruments, namely
a Mercurial Barometer
a Maximum Thermometer
a Thermometer Stand
a Wind Vane
and
a Rain Gage with glass measure
use[d] by him, are the property of the Government of New South Wales.
I have been directed to apply to you to obtain possession of these Instruments; I should therefore feel obliged, if you would hand them over to “Mr Fawcett” Police Magistrate at Casino to be taken care of until I can make arrangements for their removal.
I have also to inform you that the sum of £5 for Salary, is still due to the estate of the late Dr Barker.
An early answer will much oblige.
I have the honor to be
Sir
Your obedient servant
H. C. Russell
Acting Astronomer
