In reply to your circular of December 14th calling for a reply to the question “What will be the total amount of permanent wages paid by the Observatory Department for the year 1887.

I have the honour to inform you that the Observatory department pays in that way during the year 1887.

To the Instrument maker £200-0.0
To the Messenger & Office Keeper 110-0.0

I am not aware whether I should include in this return the Instrument Maker Mr Masters but I have done so in case the information is required. Mr Masters does not come under the Civil Service Act so far increase to salary is concerned.
