Daily cosmobite: Earth closest to the Sun

January 2, 2013

Nick Lomb
This afternoon at 3:38 pm eastern summer time the Earth is at perihelion, its closest point to the Sun for the year. At this point we are 147.1 million km from the Sun. Though this distance is 5 million km less than the distance at our furthest point in July, it has little effect on the temperature.

The astronomical highlight of 2013 is the annular eclipse of the Sun on Friday 10 May. An annular eclipse occurs when the Moon is in a distant part of its path so that it does not fully cover the Sun and leaves a thin ring or annulus of light around its edge.
