Daily cosmobite: Harley Wood searching for telescope sites, 1958

Harley Wood on site search In 1958 Harley Wood (on the right), NSW Government astronomer, traveled around NSW inspecting sites for telescopes. Here he is in Dubbo planning the next stage of the search. One of the sites he may have inspected became the Siding Spring Observatory. This long weekend the Observatory holds its “StarFest” open day and celebrates 50 years of operation.

  • This man was my first cousin – Son of Ernest Wood & Ruby Wood. Ruby Wood was my mothers sister. This photo reminds me of the time Uncle Harley and an American visitor stayed at my sister’s farm property ‘Dill Doll’ near Tooraweenah whilst they were searching for an observatory site which we now know as Siding Springs.
