MAAS Digital Communications Advisor Mark Harding will take you through the basics of social media communications for museums and collecting organisations. The workshop will cover the basics of several major social media platforms, discussing which ones are appropriate for cultural institutions. Real life examples from MAAS social media will be examined, with insights into the creation and strategy behind the posts. We’ll also look at best practice examples from museums and cultural institutions from around the world and learn some practical tips and tricks for content creation.
Mark Harding has extensive experience in social media, having worked in the corporate sector for Pan Macmillan and IKEA Australia. In his current role at MAAS, Mark oversees social media for Powerhouse Museum, Sydney Observatory, Museums Discovery Centre, Sydney Design Festival and Sydney Science Festival. Please bring your mobile phone to the workshop as you will be using it to do a practical exercise.
Following the workshop, participants will take a one-hour tour of the Deep Store led by a MAAS registrar. Deep Store is a new facility for small to medium-sized objects and provides an example of best practice collection management. Participants on this tour will find out how this facility was designed to house objects for optimum conditions. A light lunch is provided.
